Dr. Dohmen grew up in a time where allopathic medicine was considered the zenith of all medicine. Every cold got antibiotics and every vaccination created was administered. All her schooling was in allopathic medicine, but she started feeling that there was something more. In her personal life she had been a vegetarian for years, she wanted to help animals not eat them. She began to look for whole, organic foods and alternative medicine modalities for herself and her family. Her family thrived on this more "natural" lifestyle. She started to think that if these things were great for her family they must be good for her patients.
At the same time more and more research had become available that indicated that allopathic medicine was not the be all and end all that doctors had always believed. There is even some research that vaccines and medicines, that have been prescribed for years, may actually cause more harm than good.
Being disillusioned with some areas of western medicine, many doctors have been looking for alternative modalities. Wellness, nutrition and some of the Eastern traditions are becoming popular as we all are trying to create healthy balanced bodies for ourselves and for our pets. Dr. Dohmen has completed classes in herbal medicine, acupuncture, nutrition and other holistic alternatives.
