Companion Animal Practice offers many ways to prevent diseases and promote wellbeing in your pets.
- Yearly wellness exams with appropriate vaccinations and antibody titers.
- Rabies vaccinations are required by law and can be good for one year or three years. Dogs, cats and ferrets have to vaccinated for Rabies.
- We offer vaccine titer checks for dogs and cats to cut down on the over-vaccination of our pets.
- Other common vaccinations for dogs include Lyme Disease vaccinations and Bordetella (commonly known as Kennel Cough) Vaccinations.
- Another common vaccination for cats is Feline Leukemia.
- Both cats and dogs should be checked yearly for Heartworms. Dogs also need to be checked for Lyme disease (our test also checks for other tick borne diseases). Cats that go outside should be tested for Feline Leukemia (FeLV) and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV).
- All of your pets should be checked for parasites and worms. They may, at that time, need to be treated for worms and parasites.
- Stock up on Heartworm Preventative
- Heartworms are transmitted to your pets by mosquitos. Because mosquitos are around through all of our seasons we recommend that your pets be on heartworm preventative medications all year long.
- Both cats and dogs should be given heartworm preventative medication.
- Heartworm medications are prescription drugs and can only be prescribed and sold by a licensed veterinarian.
- Companion Animal Practice recommends Novartis' Interceptor but we also carry Merial's Heartgard. Both products prevent heartworm disease and many other intestinal parasites.
- Help prevent Fleas and Ticks
- Fleas can infest your home all year long. Vacuuming in your home can help keep fleas at bay. Fleas can carry tapeworm larvae and can give your dogs and cats tapeworms.
- Companion Animal Practice carries flea medications that are a prescription drug and these medications can only be sold by a licensed veterinarian.
- We carry Advantage and Advantage Multi by Bayer, Merial's Frontline Plus (for both fleas and ticks). We also carry Preventic Tick collars.
- Another preventative measure is good nutrition
- We currently promote home cooking for our cat and dog patients.
- Good balanced diets will promote healthy and happy pets.
- Nutritional diets can be tailored for your specific pets needs.
- Call our office to arrange a consultation to go over your pets dietary needs.
